On Wednesday, April 16th, thanks to school nurse, Janet Moffet, students at Conant School once again enjoyed another successful Health Fair this year. Her efforts in organizing and contacting the many disciplines and local businesses began at the start of the school year. Older student volunteers as well as parents were also involved and we thank them for their wonderful work and time. Children from all grade levels, K-5th, had a chance to engross themselves at each of the tables. After donning gloves, those who chose to, had a chance to examine a real pig's heart, most closely resembling the human heart. They were also able to see the obvious size difference from that of a cow's heart. Next, they learned and demonstrated the importance of good hand washing at Germ City thanks to two Conant parents. Proper dental care and oral hygiene tips were practiced at a table thanks to Concord Pediatric Dentistry. The Brain Injury Association of NH spoke to children about the importance of wearing helmets, whether it be for biking, skiing etc. Students also learned healthier eating habits in addition to what makes certain foods poor choices, ie high sugar & fat content. They were able to measure out the many tablespoons of sugar that encompasses simple soft drinks, ice cream, chocolate milk etc... as a large over exaggerated fat globule shook in front of them. The Concord Cooperative Market had delightful healthy food samples that were enjoyed by many. Children were able to witness the visual effect that smoking has on the lungs as well as at a microscopic level. Thanks to the Concord Police, Fire and Rescue teams for teaching children about safety as they utilized the 911 simulator to practice potential "real life" events. Students also learned about their ideal body weight and BMI. Blood pressure and oxygen saturation screenings were done as well. Children were taught how to give shots on poor Mr. Orange, they learned about cancer awareness, in addition to getting weight and height checks for car seat safety. Students participated in short yoga, karate, reiki and massage sessions. The latter being very popular amongst staff and parent volunteers. Many thanks to all of those involved for putting together such a wonderful learning experience for our Conant families.
